HEART BEATS LIGHT, La Costa Canyon High School, Betzi Roe Choreographer.
Dancer-choreographer Betzi Roe made 8 visits to high school dance classes working with 45 students in technique, improvisation and composition. The focus of this 5 week workshop was to engage students in 1.) thinking about the environments they live in 2.) developing greater awareness (sacred nature) of the outside spaces around them, 3.) identifying outside locations for improvisation and art making, 4.) developing dances for performance in several site-specific locations 5.) working along side professional practicing artists. A culminating performance was created on the school campus that included 4 site dances choreographed by the students, ending with a light installation by artist Peter Terezakis that illuminated columns along a walkway with dancers moving in and around them. Students from the digital media classes photographed and created their own video montages of the project. 150 people attended. Supported in part through the San Dieguito Union High School District and the Torrey Pines Ch. Liberal Arts Foundation |

SACRED SKY, SACRED EARTH Coronado Beach, Coronado High School, Betzi Roe Choreographer
Peter Terezakis and Betzi Roe engaged students in the 5 disciplines (Visual Art, Technical Theater, Dance, Instrumental Music, and Theater) from Coronado School of the Arts - Coronado High in the process of creating a multi-discipline, interdepartmental installation on the Coronado Beach. Both artist made multiple visits to the different classrooms and guided the students through creative process work. Each art discipline contributed some part to the whole installation. A large bamboo gate, tripods with gongs, flag poles, and artistic lights were installed by the Technical Theater students. Dance students identified 3 areas and created choreography that was appropriate to those sites. Theater students found text to memorize and recite during the performance. Instrumental music students were responsible for the accompaniment that included classical music, environmental sounds and drumming. Visual Art students designed and created banners depicting endangered species from the region. The project included 7 installations with 3 dance-music-text performance sites. 200 people of all ages were in attendance. Supported in part by CoSA Foundation. |

HEART BEATS LIGHT Torrey Pines High School, Betzi Roe Choreographer.
As part of a semester-long Mira Costa College dance class for high school students at Torrey Pines High, Betzi Roe directed an evening of 7 site-specific dances (created by students) in the quad and garden areas on the high school campus. The closing piece, on a high hill overlooking the campus, had 10 students performing in a light installation by artist Peter Terezakis. The class extended to the Digital photography class and included a lecture by Peter Terezakis (photographic montages and short film-making). These students photographed the dancers in various settings and created their own short video movies. Terezakis posted a selection of these on his website. Funding: Mira Costa College and a private foundation |
